Gucci Marmont belt review/how to measure for a Euro size belt

This is my second product review and it’s on my absolute favorite piece of accessory right now: the Gucci belt with double G buckle design.  I wear it on a daily basis because not only is it stylish but the design is so easy to use that I prefer it over regular belts.

I will go into just a brief product review, as I can tell you now that I in love with it and would not change a thing! Following the review, I will dive into a detailed explanation of how to measure for a European sized belt because it isn’t all that straight forward as one would think! I sure was pretty confused trying to buy an item online with little sizing guidance (and the stores I called were not that helpful, either).

I bought mine at Gucci.com with the direct link to the exact same belt here, but other high end retailers like Neiman Marcus or Barney’s offer the highly sought after belts, as well.

Design and Functionality

I opted for the skinny belt which is .5″ wide (or 2 cm) in the faded, unfinished leather. The double G pictured above is the “new” Marmont buckle design. Head designer Alessandro Michele took his inspiration from the Marmont buckle that Gucci used in the 70’s and he relaunched it for his contemporary collection. This explains the vintage feel of the design and I wanted to enhance this by choosing the faded brown leather.

This belt is super easy to use as illustrated below:

First, feed the tip of the belt underneath the buckle through the tongue. You can see that instead of a long prong used in regular belts that would need to be fed underneath the band into the hole, there is a small knob that you poke through the hole from the top. I find this design so much easier! It also limits wearing out the band at the spot where you would normally pull it back to feed the prong through, thereby constantly rubbing the band on the metal frame.

The tip is then held in place with a belt loop that isn’t sewn onto the band itself but attached to a separate loop underneath which makes it adjustable. I think this is much more sensible than having a fixed loop because the length changes depending on how you end up wearing your belt; more length wearing around waist or high-waisted pants or less wearing it lower.

Needless to say I am a big fan of the design, both artistic and functional!

I am not a big belt kind of gal anyway but the smaller size lends it subtle classiness for everyday use rather exerting a big statement. Don’t get me wrong, I totally dig the big belt with big buckle but I think I would have to see it on me in person first before committing to it – which takes me to the online buying guide!

How to measure for a Euro sized belt

– if you plan to order online.

There is one Gucci store in Colorado which is located in Aspen. I was not planning to be up in Aspen this year but was obsessing over this belt so started the hunt for it elsewhere in town. I wanted to try it on in person before buying and more importantly, I did not know my size! European fashion houses measure in European sizes (metric system) and even though I was capable of measuring my body circumference, I did not really know what the size actually meant, as in does a size 70 mean 70 cm around my waist, my hips, or does it mean the total length of the belt?

Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom offer Gucci belts online but they do not carry it in their physical stores, in fact, they only carried about 2 different types of women’s belt in total when I visited, from American designers nonetheless (they were S, M or L – not helpful). Even after calling two separate Gucci stores to ask for sizing help, I received two different answers which were: 1. the number refers to the total length of the belt and 2. the number refers to the length from the buckle to the first hole. Well, I found out both answers were incorrect when I took my chances and ordered my belt in a size 80.

FYI: the metric conversion is 1 inch = 2.54 cm (making my belt 31.5″)

Turns out my size 80 belt is 80 cm measured from the buckle to the middle hole! There are 5 pre-punched holes, so that would be the third one in.

In hindsight, this makes perfect sense as you want to leave some room left and right for adjustment. The space between the holes is 1 inch or 2.54 cm. When you take your measurements I would measure around where you would want to wear the belt and use this as your point(s) of reference.

As an example, here are my measurements:

  Waist: 65 cm

High-rise pants: 73

Low-rise pants: 80

This means my belt is too long when wearing it around my waist and I will need to get an additional hole punched! It fits fine on the smallest setting or 5th hole when wearing high-rise pants ( (thank goodness because that’s what most of my jeans are) and just fine on low-rise jeans. In conclusion I should have gotten a size 70 belt so I wouldn’t have to get extra holes punched! Oh well, it’s worse getting a belt that’s too small than too big!
